What are phytoestrogens and what menopause symptoms can they help with?

Phytoestrogens are plant-based compounds that have a similar structure to human oestrogen.

They can bind to estrogen receptors in the body and have a mild oestrogenic effect [about 1/1000th as potent as human oestrogen], which can help to reduce the severity of menopausal symptoms.

They are clever too, in that they can help reduce high levels of oestrogen in peri-menopause and increase low levels in menopause and postmenopause.

Many of my clients have seen the benefits of including phytoestrogens in their diet, from re-duced hot flushes, to improved mood symptoms.

They are found in most plant foods, with the highest concentration in:-

? Flaxseeds [ground]

? Soybeans and soy products eg tofu, edamame beans, tempeh organic soya yoghurt

? Legumes eg chickpeas, lentils, beans

? Broccoli sprouts

I always advise eating your daily intake as part of your 5-10 vegetables & fruits, rather than tak-ing in supplement form, especially if you’re taking HRT. 45 mg of phytoestrogens have been shown to have beneficial stabilising effects on hormones.

Do go for the highest quality, minimally processed soya products and avoid anything GMO or with added ingredients.
