Why HRT is only one of the pieces of the menopause puzzle

I get really annoyed by the conversation around menopause being mostly focused on HRT as the solution to distressing symptoms.

Don’t get me wrong I’m not against hormone replacement and I’m incredibly pleased that more women are talking about menopause and that HRT is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

However, the conversation has become too one-dimensional.

Because the truth is... menopause is far more complex than simply replacing hormones.

Here's why.

🧩 Menopause is a natural life transition – rather like puberty in reverse.

🧩 Menopause isn't simply a hormone deficiency. Hormones aren't like empty petrol tanks waiting to be topped up.

🧩 Every woman is different. There is no one-size-fits-all solution.

🧩 Our hormones are part of an incredibly complex network of biochemical processes. They're made, transported, activated and cleared by the body, and every step matters.

🧩 Not every woman can take HRT, and not every woman wants to.

🧩 Like all medications, HRT has benefits and potential risks that need to be considered individually.

🧩 Most importantly, focusing solely on HRT can overlook the powerful impact that nutrition, movement, sleep, stress management and other lifestyle factors can have on symptoms and long-term health.

This is an emotive subject, and understandably so. Every woman's experience is different.

Ten years ago, I was one of the women for whom HRT wasn't an option because of my history of breast cancer.

I had no choice but to dig deeper and understand why I was experiencing the symptoms I was, and what else I could do to support my body.

That experience was one of the reasons I retrained to become a Nutritional Therapist.

Here's what I want every woman to know...

💚 Your hormones depend on the right nutrients to be produced, transported, activated and cleared effectively. Lifestyle factors can either support these processes or disrupt them.

💚 When one hormone becomes out of sync, it can create a ripple effect throughout the whole system – rather like an orchestra where one instrument is playing out of tune.

💚 Poor sleep, chronic stress, inactivity or over-exercising, excess alcohol and an unbalanced diet can all influence hormone balance and the severity of menopause symptoms.

💚 Supporting healthy hormone metabolism and elimination is just as important as supporting hormone production.

Nutrition, exercise, hydration, restorative sleep, stress management, reducing alcohol, minimising unnecessary environmental toxins and looking after your emotional wellbeing are all pieces of the menopause puzzle that make a difference to how you experience menopause.

For some women, HRT will be an important part of that picture.

For others, it won't.

Either way, these foundations matter.

They're exactly what we focus on inside The Menopause Method – my 12-week personalised nutrition coaching programme, designed to uncover the root causes of your symptoms and give you the knowledge, confidence and tools to feel like yourself again.
