Following on from my previous post about menopause not being a simple "hormone deficiency problem," the reality is that hormones don't exist in isolation – and they don't just switch on and off. They also need more than just replacement.
Hormones have an entire lifecycle:
➡️ Production
➡️ Transport around the body
➡️ Activation within cells
➡️ Metabolism
➡️ Elimination
Every stage depends on the right nutrients and healthy body systems.
This is why focusing solely on hormone levels can be an oversimplification.
Production
Today I want to zoom in on production and transport. Hormone production is a highly regulated process involving:
🧠 Brain signalling – the hypothalamus and pituitary communicate with target tissues, not just the ovaries but also the adrenal glands and adipose (fat) tissue.
🧬 Enzyme activity – converts cholesterol into downstream hormones. Yes, your sex hormones are built from cholesterol.
🥑 Nutrient availability – steroid (or sex) hormone synthesis needs adequate protein and healthy fats.
⚖️ Feedback loops – your cells constantly adjust their sensitivity by increasing or decreasing hormone receptors. It's an intelligent system designed to maintain balance.
Transport
Once produced, hormones need to travel to where they're needed in the body.
Effective transport requires:
🥩 Protein – amino acids for carrier proteins
🫒 Healthy fats – for cell membrane and lipoprotein function
🔶 Minerals – zinc, magnesium, and selenium support transport proteins
💧 Hydration – adequate blood volume and flow
This is why diet and lifestyle have such a powerful impact on menopausal symptoms when you get it right, and why two women at the same "stage" of menopause can experience very different symptoms.
It's also why a purely "replace what's missing" approach doesn't address the whole body.
Menopause is not a single hormonal event – it's a whole-system transition.
Supporting the entire hormone lifecylce can help your body adapt more successfully to this new phase of life.
You don't need to train in biochemistry – that's where I come in. It's why I developed The Menopause Method©, my personalised 12-week nutrition coaching programme designed to help women understand their unique symptoms, support their hormone health naturally, and feel like themselves again.
Because managing menopause isn't just about replacing hormones. It's about supporting the whole woman.
